The dangers of diet soda

It's not always easy to make healthy choices, especially with fancy marketing and sexy food and drink products everywhere you turn.
But one so-called "healthy" choice you may make is drinking diet soda instead of the regular calorie alternative.

After all, if the label on the bottle says "diet", it has to be better for you than the real stuff. Right? Wrong! Loads of research shows that drinking diet soda won't help you fight fat. And even worse than that, the chemicals in diet soda can lead to all sorts of serious health problems, from diabetes, to high blood pressure, to kidney problems, and more. It turns out that the dangers of diet soda are many...

Diet soda is packed with artificial sweeteners that can confuse your body's natural ability to manage calories. But worse than that, drinking diet soda has been linked to serious health problems. Health dangers of diet soda include:

Heart disease
A study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that diet soda drinkers were at greater risk for vascular health defects, such as heart attacks and strokes.
Type 2 Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association found that people who drank diet soda are at increased risk of diabetes by 67%.

Kidney problems
A study published in Harvard Medical School's Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that women who drank 2 or more cans of soda per day were more likely to suffer decline in kidney function.

Obesity
Several studies have shown an association with people who drink diet soda and metabolic syndrome. To say it in another way, diet soda drinkers are more likely to be obese, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a larger waistline. Don't you think it's funny it's called "diet" soda, now?

Bad teeth
Although regular soda may be worse for your teeth, diet soda can still do damage. The high acidity of diet sodas causes erosion, resulting in weak, ugly and unhealthy teeth.

Pre-term delivery
In a study of nearly 60,000 Danish pregnant women, researchers found that those women who drank diet soda were at increased risk of pre-term delivery. It didn't matter if the women were overweight or regular weight. And guess what else they found? There was no correlation for preterm delivery and women who drank regular, sugar-sweetened sodas....so there's something in the "diet" that is causing this problem.

4 unusual benefits of coconut water

There is nothing like sipping on some fresh coconut water on a warm summer day, but did you know that drinking coconut water has a multitude of health benefits too? Here are some of them...

1. For clear skin: Suffering from acne or blemishes on your face? All you need to do is apply some coconut water on your face. It has the same effect as a toner and works as a moisturiser too

2. Helps with your hangover: After a wild night of partying, all you might want to do is try not to hurl. Consuming coconut water helps settle the stomach and replaces the electrolytes the body loses while drinking.

3. Prevents muscle cramps: Deficiency of potassium leads to the cramping of muscles.Coconut water is rich in potassium and thus helps prevent muscle cramps.

4. As a hair conditioner: Both drinking and washing the hair with coconut water conditions the hair perfectly from within.

DO YOU KNOW?

The length of your thumb is about the same as that of your nose.

Try these smoothies to cleanse your internal body system

Not only is this packed with nutrients and flavour, but also acts a pick-me-up, giving you the energy you need to kick-start your day. It also gives your liver a detox. A cleaned liver can process toxins faster and give you healthy, glowing skin. Start with one smoothie, twice a week, which acts as a better option than just popping multi-vitamins.

1. CARROT-CUCUMBER SMOOTHIE

How to make:

Carrots — 2 cups

Cucumber — 1

(You can also add celery and apple)

Why it works:

- Carrots have vitamin A which aids eye health.

A red energising beet smoothie can be blended with other ingredients to hide its sharp taste.

How to make:

Beetroots — ½ cup

Red apples — a few pieces

Fresh ginger, grated — 1 tsp

Blend and enjoy.

This is a nourishing and delicious fix with low-fat milk or yoghurt and fresh strawberries. It can be made as an anytime treat, especially for kids.

How to make:

Yoghurt — 1 cup

Strawberries — 2½ cups

Ground flaxseeds — 1 tbsp

Honey (optional) — 2 tsp

Blend all the ingredients together. Serve chilled.

Why it works:

- Strawberries are the best source of vitamin C. They also have folate and potassium.

- These smoothies are also a source of fiber and keep you satiated for long.

- Ground flax seeds add omega-3 fats and fiber for that extra boost.

4. SPINACH-LETTUCE

A green smoothie with spinach lettuce or even green apple, is a great immune booster. It is green due to the chlorophyll, which makes it nutrient-rich and it adds oxygen to the blood.

How to make:

Lettuce head — 1, chopped

Celery — 3 stalks

Spinach leaves — a handful
